Joburg photographer, Tim Moolman, approached me with the idea of laying down some wood in the dessert and riding the dunes like ramps… I’ve always stared at dunes thinking how rad it would be if they could be ridden. So we headed up to Windhoek & Swakopmund to see what we could come up with. The dessert thing worked out, but could be better with a bit more wood. We spent two days riding street in Windhoek, it’s not a massive city but it’s got good spots. Massive thanks to Tim Moolman for helping film & making this happen, and to his family for helping us out so much on the trip.

Cult have posted their first full length team video online. In my opinion this is a masterpiece, from the music to the riding to the editing… clean and effective. I’ve watched this video more than any other BMX video for sure. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Ultimate X 2012 is just a few weeks away and the anticipation is building for the first major contest of the year. The prize money has increased and the set up has changed completely. As with a lot of these bigger contests, the riders are usually last to find out the important info. I fired a few questions over to Markus Museler (Old School Productions), to find out a little more.

This is the third annual Ultimate X, you must be stoked. How’s the preparation going? Has it gotten easier each year setting everything up?
3rd year of the Event and finally getting some serious momentum which makes all the hard work worth while. Prep is going well, nearly all tied up, just finalising all loose ends and production now to make it a success. Each year gets easier but also increases the stress due to the event needing to be unique and different to keep things fresh.

I’ve heard rumours that it’s not going to be dirt this year for BMX… please explain the set up.
No Dirt for 2012 – Full Park and Street style set up – Thanks to Brent from Pro Ramps. We have had dirt the last few years plus all the other BMX comps we’ve done, so bringing the Park to Cape Town will make many of our local athletes Stoked. Also something cool for the crowd – seeing there has never been a Park comp in CT before at this level.

Ultimate X 2012 - BMX & Skate Park Layout (Final design will be slightly different)

Is it an invite only entry or can anyone enter the comp?
Due to the time frame of only 1 day event- it’s an invite comp again like 2011. What we are trying to do is get the top BMX Athletes to the event and make the section SA’s top BMX event and comp. Where you work all year to try get the invite and compete. Prize money been raised to R20 000 in 2012. A showcase of the cream of BMX SA!

What about the riders that aren’t going to ride the comp… can they ride the set up and will they pay more for that (R80 seems pretty cheap for all that’s going on)?
There will be a time for other uninvited guys to ride the park – schedule to be released soon on website and social media (www.ultimatex.co.za). R80 gets you in the door and event plus opportunity to session the park after main BMX Comp. We keep the price reasonable and encourage people to come and check out the best action you able to see in Action Sport and Lifestyle. Would rather have bigger numbers with a lower entrance fee than keep people away with unreasonable Entrance!

What riders are confirmed so far?
Most of the usual guys are invited and look like they will all be at the event : the local cats and also a range of dudes from and around SA.

Jason joined the Mongoose team on their recent trip around Johannesburg and Durban to film for this so you guys might recognise some spots. As usual you can expect signature Jason Phelan humour and obviously he kills it on the bike. The Sunday Riot was the first time we’ve hosted a street jam in our home city! It was overwhelming arriving at Library Gardens (LBG’s) only 45 min late and seeing how many riders had pitched up. As this was our first time doing it we had no idea what to expect. The common love for riding street and the peaceful atmosphere of Jozi on a Sunday afternoon had riders from as far as Cape Town meeting, laughing, trash talking, and sessioning. Here’s the video, scroll down for the story and pics.

LBG’s is a large area and has tons to ride, so it easily accommodated the large group. The square, manny pads, and the curved ledges were all well sessioned throughout the day. Hendri Breedt was full of rad lines and Paul Soderlund blew minds apart with a line ending in a nollie half cab… watch the video.

We even managed to have an hour long session at the spot across the road which is usually a bust. Brandon Blight had this spot covered with a 540 over the drive way. He walked away with top honour for the day and R1500.

Next spot was the Joburg Civic Centre. Within a few minutes of being there security asked us to leave. We were obviously a massive group and no one really budged. Jean Snoer did a hefty no hander drop and almost took out a photographer. We got a few more lines on camera before the more official security rocked up and tried to handcuff me.

We were forced away and decided to finish the session across the road from the civic on the monument bank. Riders dodged the cars and hit it non stop for about an hour as the sun faded behind the sky scrapers. The session ended abruptly when Jean went down hard on a truck driver…

Thanks to DC, Monster Energy, Cult, 1933 Classic Tattoos, and Skullcandy for the prizes and supporting BMX in South Africa. We had tons to give out at the cars as everyone packed up and spoke enthusiastically about the day. Cheers to everyone who came to hang out. THE RIOT is proud to present our first ever Sunday Riot street jam. BMX riders from all over will meet at the Johannesburg Library Gardens (LBG’s) on 4th December from 12h00. The legendary street spot is first on the list and is perfect for warming up.

Supported by DC Shoes, Monster Energy Drink, CULT & Skullcandy, ensures plenty of prizes will be on offer. The jam is directed at the development of young street riders in SA and so some of the pro riders will be on hand keeping an eye out for prize worthy tricks.

After LBG’s and the surrounding spots we’ll head across town. Unfortunately we can only release the locations of where we heading on the day for fear of the ever present security locusts catching on.

It’s been a good year for BMX, so come hang out and show off what you’ve been learning at the parks. Forget about paying R40 to a park that is just going to hassle you for anything and everything… On the 4th December join us in town and explore the streets of Joburg. Who knows, you might even get a clip in the video.

Mongoose SA Trip Day 1-5

Mongoose Pro riders Paul Ryan (UK), James Ivett (UK), Greg Illingworth & Stuart Loudon will be traveling around Joburg and Durban for the next two weeks. Nathan Beddows (UK), editor of Ride UK BMX magazine, will be shooting the photo’s and Will Evans (UK) is filming. Jason Phelan (UK), is also on the trip filming a promo video for his new signature We The People frame.

If you want to meet any of these pro riders be at Durban beach park on Friday 11 November or if you live near Joburg, they’ll be at Festival Mall skate park on Friday 18 November for the night session.

If you would like to find out how the trip is going keep an eye on The Riot facebook and twitter. We’ll be posting updates and pictures throughout the entire 2 week trip. Also, we’ll have a daily post on this site about the trip.

Day 0 – The Arrival

Only 3 out of the 5 guys from the UK managed to make the flight to Johannesburg. Jason Phelan and James ‘Bruza’ Ivett were stopped by security at Heathrow airport for having a small knife in Jason’s bag that Bruza had forgotten to take out with the rest of his tools. This was enough for them to be held back, hopefully a plan will be made and they’ll be in SA soon.

I picked up Stuart and the Mongoose van in Durban yesterday and headed straight for Joburg.

Day 1

We headed down to Brightwater Commons skatepark for a mellow sesh in the blazing sun. The heat was no joke, but brightwater was a nice place to get things started. Paul had some Tyrone Kelly wetting himself with his ridiculous array of tech bar spin tricks before we went to green ramp for a sunset session.

Day 2

On day 2 we cruised through to The Riot shop to sort my bike out. While I built up a new wheel the other guys warmed up in the park and we headed out to ride some street in the area. Kempton Park has some rad spots and we had just enough time to get a few photo’s a clips before the sun went down. Another pretty mellow day on the trip but everyone was excited to get on the road to the Drakensburg.

Day 3

Day 3 started a bit slow as a result of a good night out in Joburg. We packed the car and hit the road to the Drakensburg around midday. Arriving in the mountains to enjoy a perfect sunset. Naturally, the foreigners were blown away by the beautiful landscape and cameras got slightly abused. Jason Phelan definitely got a naked lying down photo with an African sunset as the back drop. Amphitheatre backpackers was the roof for the night and more than satisfactory… what backpackers has a jacuzzi, climbing wall, bar, sauna, pool, pool table, internet, and is surrounded by mountains?

Day 4

It’s harder than it sounds trying to get a bunch of grown men that think they are still kids out of bed early… but somehow we managed to get ready, pack the van, eat breakfast and be on the road by 9am! There’s not much to ride in the Berg but there is something incredible! The reservoir was found by Jimmy Reynolds, Tyrone Bradley, and Fraser Byrne about 6 years ago and has become one of the most iconic BMX spots in South Africa. The spot has been ridden by BMX legends like Ruben Alcantara and Joe Rich.

It is incredible to ride something that was built with absolutely no thought in mind of a bicycle riding on it… and it being so perfect to ride. To top it off we had some of the best riders in the world riding it. The amazing scenery and top notch riding made for the best footage we could hope for and everyone left smiling.

The next stop was Durban beach park. It rained on and off for a while and eventually settled in to a strong drizzle, cutting the session short. We’ll hopefully be back there in the next few days.

Day 5

The wind was going mental in Durban on day 5, so we went to Gateway to ride the sheltered snake run. The session was fun in between dodging the geeky long boarding collision train club. I felt like a kid in a candy shop riding there. The transitions are good and the new extensions are really fun.

After Jason’s ridiculous wall ride flair we decided to try our luck in Durban cbd. In hope that the big buildings would protect us from the wind. In the end it wasn’t the wind we had to worry about… the security was tight everywhere and we got shut down at most spots. The day ended with Bruza trying a opposite hang over tooth to hop over on a rail right outside pigsty. It was going well and some of the porkers were watching and smiling. That was until a particularly grumpy douche bag cop came out behaved rather primitive, the only sounds he could muster were “no” and “move”…

This is absolutely amazing. The riding is next level and the edit really captures what BMX is about… good times. Both the Cult team and the Federal team killed every spot. If you need any more convincing you need to know that in this edit a human being rides a bmx down a 15m long kinked round rail…
